When I was working in health and social care, I was first introduced to the Five Ways of Wellbeing. Researched and developed by the New Economics Foundation and widely promoted by the NHS, this pioneering model showed how five simple actions could make a huge difference to people’s wellbeing and improve their lives.
Working at The Bespoke Life, I soon realised that through companionship I was helping our clients to achieve these steps on a daily basis, to boost their mood and wellbeing. This is what makes companionship one of the most rewarding roles you can do.

Adapted from the NHS 5 Ways to Wellbeing – Connect, Be Active, Take Notice, Learn, and Give – I share five real-life examples of how this happens.

Connect

Companionship is all about the power of connection, which is vital to people’s wellbeing. Every week I take one of our clients to her favourite tearoom, an outing that has turned into a cherished friendship. She shares fond experiences of her life, there’s lots of laughter and I’m also ready to provide support when she needs it. Even the staff treat us like old friends now. These outings are more than just lunch – it’s about supporting someone with a sense of belonging and self-worth.

Be Active

They say that what’s good for your heart is good for your head and whatever level of mobility a client has, we are able to support them to keep active. One client lives in one of the most beautiful villages in the Cotswolds. He’s still recovering from a leg operation, so we walk at his pace in the surrounding countryside and he’s reaching his goals one step at a time. Getting outside is a great way to keep fit but it can also positively change your mood. It’s wonderful to see how the joy of the journey can put a smile on someone’s face.

Take Notice

Some of the best moments with clients is when we take time to stop, admire and appreciate what’s around us. With one of my clients in the colder months, we’ll light the wood burning stove and enjoy a pot of tea. Simply watching the fire evokes rich memories from the past and his time as a boy scout. We also savour the moment when we’re outside by noticing the seasons and finding wonder in nature, for instance discovering new flowers emerging and the trees changing colour. A mindful awareness of our surroundings, from the sound of birdsong to the smell of cut grass, enriches our quality of life.

Keep Learning

One of our clients, a wheelchair user in supported accommodation, has seen a significant improvement in her wellbeing by reconnecting with a lifelong interest. After struggling with boredom and the transition from her old home, we helped her to join the local library during one of our outings in the local community. Immersing herself in a subject she once studied has also inspired her to begin writing again, providing her with a vital sense of purpose.

Give

Research suggests that even the smallest acts of kindness can improve your mental wellbeing. While we focus on how we help our clients, it’s amazing to see the joy they give back to the community. Whether it’s a shared life story or a warm ‘thank you,’ our clients have so much to offer. One lady I support loves visiting her local shops and takes time to share positive feedback. Local shopkeepers look forward to her visits and recently at a local plant nursery, the owner recently surprised her with the gift of a beautiful plant. It’s a wonderful reminder of how one act of kindness can create another and that we all have the power to brighten someone’s day.
