At the Bespoke Life we have long recognised how arts and culture have the power to lift our clients’ spirits and boost wellbeing.
A key part of our role is to support people to do the things they enjoy and every week members of the team accompany clients to a wide range of cultural spaces and activities including libraries, galleries, historic houses, singing groups and more.
Sadie, our North Cotswolds regional manager, has also been leading a project which uses the power of music to support our clients and we have seen first-hand how a favourite playlist can lift a person’s mood and revive positive memories.
Excitingly, new research from University College London (UCL) shows that taking part in arts activities such as reading, listening to music or visiting a gallery or museum may slow the pace of biological ageing and have the same benefit as exercising once a week!
The study looked at data from over 3,500 UK adults and found that regularly engaging in arts and culture can alter our DNA chemistry and slow the pace of ageing by 4%. These findings are a wonderful reminder of how beneficial arts and culture can be.
The researchers behind the study emphasised that both the frequency and the variety of things you do matter. A mix of activities for instance could help with different physical, mental, emotional and social benefits.
This is one of the many reasons why we believe in regularly supporting our clients with a range of activities to enrich their lives.
Regional manager Sadie says of the music project: “I introduced music as a key project within The Bespoke Life because it is such a powerful and deeply meaningful tool not only for those living with a dementia, but for all of our clients. Music has a unique ability to reach places that words often cannot; it can awaken memories, lift spirits, and create moments of genuine connection. Scientific research shows that music stimulates multiple areas of the brain, often enabling people to access memories and emotions that may otherwise feel lost.
“Over the past year, we have woven music into our work, and the impact has been truly remarkable. Companions have witnessed incredibly moving moments, clients who are non-verbal suddenly singing along to familiar songs, particularly when out in the car, reconnecting in ways that feel almost magical.
“Music has sparked conversations, opened doors to treasured memories, and brought a renewed sense of joy and identity to those we support.
“It has become more than just an activity; it is a way of connecting, understanding, and bringing light into our clients’ everyday lives.”
