How one companion’s relationship with her client shows the true impact of personalised care and companionship.
Every day at The Bespoke Life, our companions build meaningful connections that shape the lives of the people they support. In this case study, one of our companions shares her experience working with a client whose journey reflects exactly why personalised companionship matters.
Through her perspective, you’ll get a real sense of the trust, warmth and positive change that can grow from consistent, person-centred support.
Being a companion is a very rewarding job. There are many adults who are lonely, vulnerable and isolated. Sometimes, people just want the freedom to get out and about but are physically unable to, for many reasons.
Even just carrying out a daily task or running a simple errand can be a huge challenge. This could be due to mobility, heath, confidence or simply no longer holding a driver’s license.
Often there are people who are lonely, or due to health reasons, cannot get out and meet people, socialise, or take part in leisure activities or even partake in their hobbies and interests. This is where being a companion really makes the difference.
One of my clients is a vulnerable young adult. She has various health conditions which prevent her from leading an independent life. For this lady, their main priority as a younger adult is to get out and about and have a trusted friend to spend time with.
She benefits hugely having someone to chat to. She absolutely loves being taken out so she can see the local countryside. We go for coffee, we go shopping. It’s her time, where she can have some freedom to go somewhere new. It is really valuable time for her.
Being that she is a vulnerable adult, having a companion by her side gives her the confidence to get out beyond her home and see new places. It gives her a real confidence boost and empowers her. It’s wonderful to see her enjoying this time and feel like she is really living.
I feel it is a privilege to be able to give this freedom and support to someone.
When you are a companion, seeing clients on a regular basis, you build trust and friendships. She appreciates hugely having this friendship. Having someone to share her interests with is very important.
We always have so much to chat about, reminiscing about growing up in the same decade. Enjoying nature, visiting new places. Most of all it is really important for her to have someone to confide in. Life can be tough when you feel isolated and unsure of the future. Knowing you have someone to talk to, confide in and trust in, is absolutely essential. She says she has found having the visits ‘Life changing’.
A companion is a really important job role. Knowing that you are making a hugely positive impact on someone’s life really is very rewarding. It’s not just the social interaction that is beneficial. Being able to take clients out into the countryside has a huge impact on helping to improve their mental health too. Being close to nature, a short stroll and fresh air, as we all know, can extremely enhance our mental health and well-being.
Of course, it’s always a bonus if the sun is shining too, boosting our vitamin D!
Since visiting, we have developed a really strong bond. It has been wonderful to see how much she enjoys our time together. Even if at first she feels like she is having a bad day, by the end of visit she is always upbeat and feeling happy. This in itself, shows how important the visits are and the impact it’s making on her life.
It’s great to be part of her life and for her, knowing she has a friend.
